The Apparatus Test (Gubsomat – SWISS) by Easyflight Training

The Aparatus Test (“Gubsomat”) is a psychometric multi-task coordination assessment modelled after the long-established Gubsomat used in the SWISS pilot selection process – even in Swissair times. It’s a more advanced multitasking test than the MIC in the DLR test.

This test is not about realistic flight physics or aerodynamics, but about mental, motor and coordinative performance under sustained workload.

Candidates must simultaneously control multiple flight-style instruments by coordinating turn rate, climb and descent rate, and speed within defined limits using precise control inputs.

At the same time, the test evaluates the ability to manage parallel cognitive demands such as symbol comparisons or stopwatch-related reaction tasks.

The assessment is divided into two main task types:

Part 1: Maintain Constant Relations

Candidates are required to keep defined instrument relations constant or perform small controlled adjustments over time.

This phase primarily measures continuous attention, fine motor control and stability under monotony.

Part 2: Follow Digital Display

The target values of digital displays change dynamically and must be actively followed and corrected.

This significantly increases cognitive load and tests adaptive coordination under pressure.
