Word Analogies is a classic verbal reasoning test used in the AMC, the second stage of the KLM pilot selection process. The format is simple but unforgiving: you’re given a base word pair (for example arm : hand) and then a list of single words as answer options. Your task is to select two individual words from that list to build a new word pair that has the exact same relationship as the base pair. This assesses pattern recognition, logical consistency, and speed under time pressure, not fancy vocabulary. This product trains you with AMC-style analogies so you build a reliable solving method, increase speed, and avoid the common traps that cause unnecessary mistakes.

Analogies

In this chapter, each question will present you with two words that are related in a specific way. Your task is to identify that relationship and then choose, from the given options, the pair of words that shares the same type of relationship. An analogy test measures your ability to recognize patterns and logical connections between concepts. The relationship can take many forms, such as: Synonyms (happy : joyful) — both words have a similar meaning. Antonyms (hot : cold) — the words have opposite meanings. Part to whole (petal : flower) — one word is a part of the other. Category (sparrow : bird) — one word is a specific example of the other. Cause and effect (rain : flood) — the first leads to the second. Tool to function (key : unlock) — the first is used to perform the action of the second. Sequence or order (infant : toddler) — the first comes before the second in a progression. When solving an analogy question: Identify the link between the first two words — ask yourself: “What is the exact connection here?” Apply the same logic to the answer choices, checking both the type of relationship and its direction. Eliminate mismatches — some pairs may be related but in a different way than the original pair. A correct answer will mirror both the relationship type and its direction, not just be loosely related.
